PUBLIC WARNING OF OVERNIGHT THEFTS FROM VEHICLES

Posted on Friday August 09, 2024

After a re-emergence of overnight thefts, York Regional Police is reminding citizens to be cautious when leaving valuables in unattended vehicles.

In recent incidents, multiple suspects have been seen overnight in Richmond Hill neighbourhoods, in the area of Centre Street and Atkinson Avenue. The suspects walk up to vehicles parked on the street and in driveways before entering vehicles to steal valuables, in some cases breaking windows. Thieves are stealing cash, wallets, credit and bank cards, and any other small items of value.

This type of theft occurs all across York Region.

York Regional Police would like to remind citizens to be cautious and protect themselves by following these tips:

  • Always lock your vehicle, make sure the windows are rolled up and never leave keys behind
  • If you have a garage, park inside it and lock the vehicle as well as garage doors
  • Keep your vehicle in a well-lit area
  • Consider installing security cameras
  • Don’t leave anything valuable, including identification, wallets or cash inside unattended vehicles.
  • If you witness any suspicious people or activity, or are a victim, contact police immediately

Criminals are opportunists. Do not give them the opportunity to make you a victim of crime.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7244, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.
