Complaints about York Regional Police

York Regional Police is committed to working with all members of the community and we hold ourselves accountable in everything we do. All complaints filed by the public about our policies and services, or about the conduct of an officer, are taken seriously.

Complaints fall into three categories:

  • Complaints against the conduct of a York Regional Police officer
  • Complaints against the policies of, or services provided by, York Regional Police
  • Complaints against the conduct of a York Regional Police special constable

Complaints against police officers

The administration of public complaints will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA), an arms-length civilian agency of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. The LECA is responsible for receiving, overseeing, monitoring and dealing with all public complaints about the conduct of police officers in Ontario.

Complaints may be filed in several ways:

  • Visit any police station in Ontario to make a complaint in person. At the station, the public complaint process will be explained. Additional local resolutions, which are part of the LECA process, may also be offered at that time
  • Contact the LECA by telephone at 1-877-411-4773 to request complaint forms be sent to you. Once completed and signed, they may be mailed or delivered in person to:

    Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA)
    655 Bay Street, 10th Floor
    Toronto, ON  M7A 2T4

Complaints about York Regional Police service delivery or policy

If you have a complaint about the services of the York Regional Police or a York Regional Police policy, you may choose to file a complaint with the Inspectorate of Policing (IOP).

To learn more about the IOP complaint process or to file a complaint, please visit the IOP website.

Uncertain whether your complaint is a Conduct Complaint or Service Complaint? Complaints filed with either LECA or the IOP will be referred to the correct agency, so there is no need to file a complaint with both agencies.
