About Legal Services at YRP

The mission of Legal Services is to provide comprehensive and timely legal support that enables York Regional Police (YRP) members to navigate challenges with confidence and integrity. We identify and manage risk, provide legal advice to the Chief of Police, and represent YRP in various Court proceedings.

Civil Litigation

Parties to a civil proceeding may not be familiar with the materials required in their court filings to obtain York Regional Police records.

A frequent example we encounter is Rule 30.10 Wagg motions for the production of  YRP records in relation to automobile accident litigation.

Due to the nature of police investigations and the inherently sensitive information they contain, YRP can only disclose records if specific criteria are satisfied. Therefore, any motion seeking the production of  YRP records must use carefully drafted terms that comply with applicable legal restrictions, such as the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

To assist those navigating the court process, we have provided the following resources:

Legal documents can be served to legal.courtdocs@yrp.ca. Service is only considered accepted once receipt is acknowledged by YRP.
