Paid duty officers work off-duty to perform policing duties for individuals or organizations outside of the police service. These officers are assigned directly by the police service, and may be requested to serve a variety of functions.
Examples of paid duties include traffic management, funeral escorts or security at events or in commercial businesses.
To request a paid duty during business hours, follow the “Request a Paid Duty” link below and follow these instructions:
To request a paid duty for the next business day, outside of business hours, fax the Paid Duty Request Form or the Funeral Paid Duty Request Form to the policing district in which the paid duty will be performed.
Paid duty requesters should follow up by contacting the district directly to ensure the request was received.
York Regional Police will review all paid duty requests within two business days. Payment is required in full prior to the requested paid duty date.
Please note: Due to traffic flow and volume at certain locations, York Regional Police may assign additional officers to fulfill the paid duty request.
When planning a funeral procession, please select a route that does not include intersections equipped with red light cameras. If an officer cannot be seen within an image captured by a red light camera, all vehicles proceeding against a red light will be considered to have committed an offence and notices will be issued to the vehicle owners.
Charitable and not-for-profit organizations may apply for a discounted administrative fee.
Upon requesting the paid duty, payment will be processed in full, including the 24 per cent administrative fee. After check-out, requestors will be provided instructions on how to apply for the not-for-profit and charity administrative fee.
After the request is reviewed and approved, York Regional Police will issue a refund to reimburse the over-payment within 15 business days following the completion of the paid duty.
Cancellation requests must be received no later than 24 hours before a paid duty shift is scheduled to begin. Failure to submit a cancellation request by this time will result in billing for three hours at regular rates for each officer originally requested, or four hours if cancellation occurs within one hour of the requested shift.
A paid duty shift cannot be rescheduled within 24 hours of the requested shift time. In this instance, applicants will be required to cancel the original request and above fees are applicable.
To cancel during business hours, contact the Paid Duty Unit at 905-830-0303 ext. 6085. To cancel outside business hours, contact the district directly. Provide your email address to the officer at the district. If cancelling more than one shift, please provide start times for each shift.
