UPDATE - PROJECT MAGIC CONCLUDES WITH MORE THAN $3.5 MILLION IN MAGIC MUSHROOMS SEIZED FROM ILLEGAL DISPENSARIES

Posted on Thursday April 17, 2025

After a lengthy investigation, Project Magic has concluded, resulting in more than $3.5 million worth of magic mushrooms (psilocybin) and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) seized and 15 suspects charged.

York Regional Police Guns, Gangs and Drug Enforcement Unit (GGDEU) investigators have made a significant impact in the fight against illegal magic mushroom stores operating within the community.

After receiving complaints from the community, the GGDEU commenced an investigation into the FunGuyz Magic Mushrooms store, located in the area of Yonge Street and Centre Street in March 2024.

The production, sale and possession of magic mushrooms and the psychedelic drug DMT are illegal in Canada. There are no legal stores in Ontario permitted to sell these controlled substances.

Investigators targeted FunGuyz Magic Mushroom stores across the province of Ontario and laid 78 charges against 15 suspects involved in the production and distribution of illegal substances.

GGDEU executed 29 search warrants and seized 181 kilograms of dried psilocybin, 137 kilograms of edible psilocybin, 167,645 psilocybin capsules, 179 grams of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), 541 grams of illicit cannabis, more than $450,000 in cash and a property worth over $1 million.

Investigators have issued arrest warrants for Mozda KARIM, who is believed to be in the United Kingdom, and for Samer AKILA, who failed to comply with his release order and is believed to be in Egypt.

York Regional Police is reminding the community of the following:

  • The sale (trafficking) of magic mushrooms and DMT is a criminal offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of these substances is also illegal. Any members from the community that purchased these substances from this business or online could face criminal charges
  • The businesses engaged in selling these products are illegal
  • Landlords who rent properties to these businesses may be financially or criminally liable
  • Magic mushrooms and DMT sold to the community from these businesses are not subject to any government quality control measures

The successful completion of this lengthy investigation was made possible through funding provided by the Ontario Government, Ministry of the Solicitor General and the Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario, which supported this investigation.
