Residents on Pugsley Avenue were woken by the sound of two cars roaring up the street at 3:30 a.m. on September 4, 2003. After they screeched to a halt, the sound of a barrage of gunfire rang out through the neighbourhood of quaint residential homes.
After all was quiet, 22-year-old Joseph Kwaw was lying dead on the driveway at 116 Pugsley Ave., where he had recently rented a room. He was pronounced by paramedics at the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing people flee from the scene, but Joseph's killers have never been identified. While Joseph had just moved into the home, neighbours told investigators that he had lived in the neighbourhood for several years.
